What? Intro to Metals 1: Jewelry & Small Objects (6-week course)

Beginning students will explore the fundamentals of working with metal to make jewelry and small objects. Learn basic techniques such as sawing, piercing, filing, disc cutting, dapping, doming and finishing. This class will also introduce students to techniques such as soldering, metal forming and basic construction. Students will begin to develop skills and personal creativity through instructor-guided projects that focus on design and execution. Each student will be encouraged to complete two to three pieces while becoming more proficient with the materials, tools, studio equipment, and safety practices. This class is also great for previous entry-level students who would like additional instruction and support.

What? Cuttlefish Casting! (1 day workshop)

When? November 23rd, 2024, 10:00am - 4:30pm, January 25th, 2025, 10:00am - 4:30pm

If you love playing with fire and metal this course is for you! Students will learn how to carve molds into cuttlebones (the backbone of the mediterranean squid, the cuttlefish), learn how to melt and pour metal into their molds, and learn finishing techniques for cast objects! Students can expect to leave the workshop with at least one piece of finished jewelry.

What? Enameling 100: What the Flux?! (6-week course)

When? September 19th, 2024, to October 24th, 2024, Every Thursday 6:30pm-9:30pm

This course is designed to introduce brand new enamelists to the various possibilities of enamel and how it has been used throughout history. We will dive in-depth into the history of enamel and how the different techniques have evolved throughout time. Students will get hands on experience in preparing their metal, applying klyr-fire, and firing enamel pieces in a kiln. Students will be tasked with making color test tiles and at least 1 finished piece of jewelry. Students can expect to leave this course having gained an in-depth understanding of the basic enameling techniques. We will cover Sifting, Sgraffito, Graphite, Stenciling, and Decals.

What? Graphite on Enamel Pendants! (3-hour taster workshop)

When? Dec 7th, 2024, 4:30 - 7:30pm

Students will dive into surface design on etched enamel surfaces using graphite pencil to create their own unique design! You will learn how to etch enamel, fire your pieces in an electric kiln, and drawing tips for successful designs! Basic metalsmithing skills will be briefly introduced and demonstrated with several in process pieces provided to ensure everyone finishes at least 1 -2 pendants to take home!

Students will experiment on flat enamel surfaces using stencils and color to create their earrings! You will learn how to sift enamel, use stencils for design elements, fire your pieces in an electric kiln, and cover color theory tips for successful designs! Basic metalsmithing skills will be briefly introduced and demonstrated with several in process pieces provided to ensure everyone finishes at least 1 pair of earrings to take home!

What? Enameled Holiday Ornaments! (3-hour taster workshop)

When? Dec 7th, 2024, 12:00pm - 3:00pm

Students will create their own unique holiday ornament using enamel surface design techniques on flat enamel surfaces. You will learn how to sift enamel, use stencils and masking for design elements, and fire your pieces in an electric kiln. Basic shapes and templates will be provided, those with prior metalsmithing experience can cut their own designs if they so choose. Students will leave with at least 1-2 finished enameled ornaments for the holidays!

What? Basic Setting and Casting Intro Sampler! (2-day workshop)

When? November 16th & 17th, 10am-5pm

Do you have a bit of metal-working knowledge under your belt but not sure what direction you should go next? Try your hand at an array of basic casting and stone setting methods - a sampler of techniques that's sure to leave you feeling satisfied and inspired!

This jam-packed weekend workshop will offer students the opportunity to learn the magic of melting metal and casting, setting stones, and how to take their soldering skills up a notch! We will focus on several basic organic, alternative casting methods including water casting, broom casting, cuttlefish casting, and discussions on casting stones in place; students will also learn how to melt down their own metal / scrap for ingot and sheet making, in addition to how to finesse a crucible with control! This class will additionally focus on how to incorporate stone settings into cast objects, for some extra pizzazz. Throughout the course participants will improve their soldering abilities as they work to make bails, rings, and other finding components for their jewelry pieces. Students can expect to take away small finished silver pieces, depending on skill level and time.
